Fes to Marrakech, Chefchaouen and Meknes: how to travel

Fes sits in the middle of a very good travel route in northern Morocco. Here is how to get to the places most visitors want to see next. Times and prices are typical and change, so check the current timetable before you travel.

Fes to Marrakech

  • Train: the most comfortable way, but long, usually about 6.5 to 7 hours. Several direct trains run each day, and tickets are typically about 220 to 420 dirhams.
  • Bus: the cheapest, around 9 to 10 hours, often with a change.
  • Flight: there is a direct flight between Fes and Marrakech on some days of the week. Check the current schedule, as routes change.
  • By car: about 7 hours on the road. Many travelers break the journey.

Fes to Chefchaouen

  • CTM bus: the most reliable option, around 4 hours, with several departures a day, typically 80 to 140 dirhams. Book ahead in busy periods.
  • Shared grand taxi: about 3 to 4 hours, usually leaving when full, and a bit faster than the bus.
  • Private transfer or taxi: the easiest with luggage or children, and prices vary, so agree the price first.

Chefchaouen is about 200 km from Fes. Many visitors spend one night there.

Fes to Meknes and Volubilis

Meknes is the easiest day trip. Trains run roughly every hour, the ride takes under an hour, and tickets are cheap. Volubilis, the Roman ruins, has no railway: take the train to Meknes and then a grand taxi for the last 30 km or so, and agree the fare before you get in. Many guided day trips combine Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes, with pickup in Fes.

Fes to Rabat and Casablanca

  • Rabat: by train in about 3 hours, with trains roughly hourly.
  • Casablanca: by train in about 4 hours.

At the station and the airport

The main station is Fès-Ville, in the new part of the city. From the airport, a taxi to the city takes about 20 to 30 minutes. See our guide to getting from the airport and train station to your apartment.

Tips

  • Book popular trains and buses a few days ahead, especially on holidays.
  • Carry small notes for taxis and agree fares before you get in.
  • Luggage in the hold of a bus may cost a few dirhams extra.
